Our Jonathan: Ralf & Marita’s Story

During the pregnancy, our baby was very active. Around 38 weeks, I realized he wasn’t moving much. I did become concerned, but we knew it was normal for babies to move less near the end of pregnancy. The next morning I woke to what I thought was my water breaking, but it was blood.

We called the hospital. Upon arrival, the doctors used several stethoscopes to detect a heartbeat with no success. It was 1989, and they didn’t routinely ultrasound patients on the labour and delivery unit. They informed us that our precious son had passed away.

After 8 hours of intense labour, our Jonathan came into this world. They wrapped him in a blanket and gave him to us to hold. Because of the morphine, many details are clouded for me. We took pictures of him and spent time holding and cuddling him.
